Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) commends the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy’s announcement on creating a Select Committee to hold China accountable on January 10, 2023. The U.S. House of Representatives voted 365 to 65 in favor of establishing the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The new committee will be chaired by Representative Mike Gallagher and will be tackling issues including ending dependencies on China in supply chains, curtailing theft of U.S. intellectual property, and highlighting Beijing’s authoritarian state.
“We want to stop trillions of American dollars from financing communist genocide and military modernization, the committee will work to prevent it including by investigating how ESG (environmental, social, and governance) benefits the CCP,” said Kevin McCarthy. He also remarked that a Republican-led House will stand up to the CCP in ending any dependence on China, standing up to communist genocide, and protecting our (America’s) national security and sovereignty.
Executive Director Rushan Abbas said “the Uyghur community appreciates Speaker Kevin McCarthy for keeping his promise to form a committee against China. This is an important step to systematically implement the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) to hold CCP accountable for using Uyghur forced labor. More importantly, to stop the genocide that millions of Uyghurs are facing in East Turkistan. The CCP is threatening global democracy, we need more support from like-minded partners to defend human rights by taking similar actions against the CCP.”
The CCP is a threat to the freedom and democracy of the world while undermining all aspects of the rule of law. CFU urges all countries to take action and stand up against the CCP, to reject their products that are tainted with Uyghur forced labor, and not to be complicit in the Uyghur genocide.
