CFU Highlights the Ongoing Uyghur Genocide on China’s National Day
Washington, D.C. – As the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) marks its “National Day” today, Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) reminds the world that this day represents the founding of a regime responsible for decades of brutal authoritarian rule, countless massacres, an ongoing genocide, and crimes against humanity.
For Uyghurs, Tibetans, Chinese dissidents, and all those who continue to suffer under the CCP’s rule, October 1st is a painful reminder of the silenced voices, stolen freedoms, and erased identities. Meanwhile, the CCP staged a propaganda spectacle to claim so-called “national unity,” masking its crimes and whitewashing decades of repression.
Last week, Xi Jinping, the leader of the CCP, visited the Uyghur region to mark the founding of the so-called “Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.” During his three-day visit, Xi called for “every possible effort to uphold social stability,” and hailed the Party’s ethnic autonomy system as “entirely correct” and “effective.” His visit is a deliberate attempt to legitimize the oppression in the region, and his speech signals the continuation of genocidal policies, including arbitrary detention, forced labor, forced sterilization and abortion, severe infringement of religious rights, and the systematic erasure of Uyghur identity.
“Behind China’s orchestrated celebration on this day are countless people living under oppression. What Beijing presents in the Uyghur region and across the country today is an assertion of control by an authoritarian regime and an illusion of unity. In reality, families like mine continue to suffer. My sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, remains unjustly imprisoned, along with millions of others. To accept or participate in this celebration is to allow these abuses to continue unchecked,” noted CFU Executive Director Rushan Abbas.
CFU renews its call on the international community to see beyond rhetoric and hold the Chinese government responsible for its systematic human rights violations that constitute crimes against humanity and genocide. We stand in solidarity with all who continue to live in anguish and reaffirm the imperative for persistent global attention, sustained pressure, and concrete measures to confront these atrocities and safeguard the rights and dignity of the affected people.
