Campaign For Uyghurs (CFU) joins all those who commemorate Juneteenth, a historic day that symbolizes freedom and the end of slavery in the United States. As we celebrate the progress made in the fight against racial injustice, CFU draws attention to a parallel struggle faced by the Uyghur people under the yoke of forced labor and systemic oppression in China.
Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during slavery and the enduring fight for equality. CFU stands in solidarity with the African American community and condemns all forms of racial discrimination and modern-day slavery. It is therefore imperative that we shed light on the ongoing Uyghur forced labor crisis, where Uyghur men and women are coerced into factory work, textile production, and other industries under exploitative conditions. This state-sponsored slavery not only deprives Uyghurs of their basic rights and freedoms but also fuels global supply chains, perpetuating a cycle of complicity.
Executive Director Rushan Abbas highlights the connection between Juneteenth and the plight of the Uyghurs, stating, “As we celebrate Juneteenth, we must recognize the harrowing reality of Uyghur forced labor, which echoes the abhorrent practices of historical slavery. The Uyghur people are being subjected to forced labor, stripped of their dignity, and trapped in a cycle of enslavement by the Chinese regime. We must unite to raise awareness and take action against this grave injustice.”
On this Juneteenth, CFU calls upon the international community, governments, and corporations to take a firm stance against Uyghur forced labor and ensure that no products tainted by this human rights abuse reach consumers. We urge consumers to make informed choices, reject goods produced through Uyghur forced labor, and support ethical and sustainable practices.
