Campaign For Uyghurs (CFU), marks the one-year anniversary of the implementation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). On this significant occasion, the CFU recognizes the progress made and calls on governments worldwide to follow suit by enacting similar legislation to combat forced labor and genocide in East Turkistan being committed by the Chinese regime.
Through extensive engagement with key stakeholders, including testimony before the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) and Subcommittee on Trade and Department of Homeland Security’s forced labor enforcement task force (FLETF), participation in roundtable panel discussions, and numerous media appearances, CFU spearheaded advocacy efforts that contributed to the enactment of this critical legislation. However, these efforts have not gone unnoticed by the Chinese state-run media, which has launched a targeted campaign of attacks against Rushan Abbas, the Executive Director of CFU, for her dedicated advocacy work.
Chinese state-run media outlets have also attempted to discredit renowned researchers from the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), Dr. Adrian Zenz‘s findings and undermine the credibility of his research on Uyghur forced labor, and for years have launched a targeted campaign of attacks against him. These attacks are indicative of the Chinese government’s relentless efforts to suppress information and divert attention from the atrocities being perpetrated against the Uyghur people.
Executive Director, Rushan Abbas, stresses the importance of widespread adoption of legislation to combat forced labor. She stated, “As we commemorate the one-year anniversary of the UFLPA, we call on governments worldwide to take a stand against forced labor and genocide in East Turkistan. It is imperative that countries follow the United States’ lead and enact similar legislation to create a unified front in the global fight for justice and accountability. We must send a clear message that forced labor has no place in our supply chains and that we stand in solidarity with the Uyghur people.”
CFU urges governments worldwide to heed the call and enact legislation that mirrors the UFLPA. By doing so, governments can demonstrate their commitment to upholding human rights, combating forced labor, and ensuring the integrity of global supply chains. CFU calls on governments, businesses, and individuals to unite in the pursuit of justice, accountability, and a world free from forced labor and human rights abuses.
