CFU Marks 36 Years Since the Tiananmen Square Massacre

Washington, D.C. – As the world marks the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4, Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) commemorates the victims of the massacre and condemns the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) ongoing repressions targeting various communities. This solemn occasion highlights not only a historical atrocity but also the CCP’s continued persecution of those who demand justice and freedom, including Uyghurs, Chinese dissidents, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, and other marginalized communities. CFU urges the international community to confront this ongoing authoritarianism and honor the victims through meaningful action.

On June 4, 1989, the Chinese government launched a violent crackdown on peaceful student-led protests in Tiananmen Square, killing hundreds, potentially thousands of unarmed civilians. These protesters called for democratic reforms, freedom of speech, and government accountability. The CCP responded with tanks, censorship, and decades of repression that continue to this day, as evidenced by the Uyghur genocide in East Turkistan, the dismantling of democracy in Hong Kong, and the criminalization of remembrance itself, even online. The legacy of Tiananmen remains a stark reminder of the regime’s war on truth, freedom, and democracy.

“As we remember the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, we urge the international community to take concrete action against the CCP’s continued human rights abuses,” said Rushan Abbas, Founder and Executive Director of Campaign for Uyghurs. “The same regime that silenced student voices in 1989 is now committing genocide against Uyghurs and crushing dissent across China. Remembering Tiananmen means refusing to stay silent; it means standing up for justice and freedom today.”

CFU continues to advocate for justice for victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre and all those suffering under the CCP’s authoritarian rule as well as holding the CCP accountable for the Uyghur genocide. We urge governments and human rights organizations to impose meaningful sanctions, support grassroots movements for freedom, and safeguard the right to remembrance against censorship and repression. As Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kongers, Falon Gong practitioners, and others resist the same regime that crushed Tiananmen, we must join together to demand accountability and defend human dignity.
