WHY THE BEIJING 2022 OLYMPICS MATTER
You may have seen the Beijing 2022 Olympics show up in the news recently. Why?
China is set to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in one year- all while committing a genocide against the #Uyghurs of #EastTurkistan (called #Xinjiang by China).
The #IOC has ignored calls to relocate the games and has claimed that China will be a great host- blatantly avoiding the topic of genocide.
Uyghurs deserve better. And so do the Olympics. Calls to relocate or diplomatically boycott the 2022 Olympics have been made by human rights organizations and Uyghur groups.
Recently, the Canadian Parliament passed a motion recognizing the Uyghur genocide, and to bring the discussion of relocating the 2022 Olympics as China continues their genocide.
It is important that we do not allow authoritarian regimes that are actively committing genocide to host prestigious world events; to do so is to allow China to go on business as usual.
