CFU Commends Bipartisan Passage of Uyghur Policy Act in House
Washington, D.C. – Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) welcomes the passage of the bipartisan Uyghur Policy Act (H.R. 2635) in the U.S. House of Representatives on September 2, 2025. Led by Representatives Young Kim (R-CA), Ami Bera (D-CA), and Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the legislation establishes a comprehensive U.S. strategy to support Uyghurs and other persecuted communities facing grave human rights abuses under the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) ongoing genocide. This milestone demonstrates growing bipartisan resolve to confront Beijing’s atrocities and to ensure Uyghur rights remain a priority in American foreign policy.
The Uyghur Policy Act, now passed twice in the House, affirms the United States’ commitment to protecting the distinct ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic identity of the Uyghur people. The bill directs the State Department to coordinate U.S. policy on Uyghur human rights, press for the closure of detention camps, and strengthen accountability for Beijing’s crimes through international mechanisms. It further supports the Uyghur diaspora by addressing transnational repression, provides resources for Uyghur advocates to engage in global diplomacy, requires Uyghur language training for U.S. diplomats, and calls for sustained U.S. leadership at the United Nations to ensure continued scrutiny of China’s atrocities.
“This legislation is a vital step to ensure America stands firmly with the Uyghur people amid China’s ongoing genocide,” said Rushan Abbas, Founder and Executive Director of CFU. “This bill strengthens accountability for the Chinese government’s crimes and delivers a powerful message of solidarity to millions of Uyghur families suffering under repression. I strongly support its passage and am deeply grateful to Representative Young Kim and all members of Congress who continue to champion this cause.”
CFU urges the Senate to swiftly advance and pass the Uyghur Policy Act to implement its provisions without delay. At a time when Uyghurs continue to suffer from forced labor, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and transnational repression, the United States must lead by example in defending human rights and holding the Chinese government accountable. CFU stands ready to work with policymakers, advocates, and the global community to ensure this legislation becomes law and delivers meaningful protection and justice for Uyghurs worldwide.
